Alterations & Additions

2025

Mylor Residence consists of contemporary alterations and additions to an existing cottage in the Adelaide Hills. Cumulus collaborated with the clients to prioritise strategies that would breathe new life into the home, enhancing its functionality for contemporary family living while minimising the extent of new development by repurposing existing elements.

The design embraces the surrounding landscape, with the new addition carefully framing key views and creating tranquil spaces for contemplation. Natural timber wall linings, woven floor coverings, and green stone are integrated throughout the interior to create a warm, inviting atmosphere that reflects the natural beauty of the Adelaide Hills.

At the heart of the home, the kitchen island serves as a focal point, seamlessly connecting loved ones and transforming everyday gatherings into cherished moments. Its design emphasises both architectural elegance and the importance of communal space.

Externally, surface-charred timbers (Shou Sugi Ban) are used as the primary cladding, offering a striking contrast to the original red brick and stone leaf cladding of the cottage, while adding depth and texture to the exterior. In contrast to the complexity of the existing cottage forms, the new additions adopt a restrained design with strong horizontal lines. The gable roof forms of the new living area echo the original house, creating a visual dialogue between old and new.
