John Chappel Unit
Hyde Park, South Australia | Kaurna Country
The project comprised initial research to determine the architect, and architectural services to restore the charm and character of the modernist design. Exploration of Chappel's archive at S.A. State Library determined it was one of his earliest commissions, as part of subdivisions of 68 Northgate St Unley Park in 1958.
The project brief involved removing an existing kitchen which divided the main living space. The kitchen personified the modernist ideals of function and utility, however existing joinery had been badly maintained, and blocked access to the unit's private courtyard. The design intent was to allow for a contemporary arrangement while maintaining a modernist aesthetic. Inspired by International Style modernism of Mies Van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House (1951) a minimal material palette was applied. The redesign attempts to contextualise the 1950s kitchen by employing laminated bench tops and hoop pine plywood for a touch of warmth reflective of mid century period joinery.
